Project Summary

This nature reserve is made up of chalk grassland and scrub with military remains in every nook and cranny. Volunteer conservation tasks mostly include clearing scrub and non-native invasive trees from the chalk grassland. Historically, the fortifications were surrounded by chalk grassland.

Project Description

WESTERN HEIGHTS – SCRUB CLEARING

10:00am until 15:00pm on the following dates:

8th and 10th December 2019, 14th January, 9th and 11th February, 10th and 31st March 2020.

LEADER: Matt Weiss, White Cliffs Countryside Partnership (07880 706993). MEET: St. Martin’s Battery car park, South Military Road, Western Heights, Dover (TR 213 404).

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING WITH YOU Bring plenty to drink and lunch if you intend to stay all day. We usually provide water, squash, tea and biscuits. We provide an experienced leader, training and supervision, tools and gloves, but please bring your own gear if you prefer.

WHAT YOU SHOULD WEAR • Sturdy boots or safety shoes (not trainers) with good grip and thick soles • Old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or torn • Long sleeved shirts and trousers to protect your limbs • Waterproofs/ wellies if rain forecast.
