Project Description

Native UK hedgehogs have declined rapidly in recent years, and every hedgehog record helps us understand where they are living in the UK. We encourage people to log sightings online, whether alive, dead or roadkill. Sightings data from the Big Hedgehog Map is shared with the NBN Atlas and biological records centres, and feeds into important research.

The BIG Hedgehog Map is part of Hedgehog Street, a joint project between People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). Hedgehog Street was set up in 2011 to raise awareness of hedgehogs in the UK.

Although hedgehogs are in decline, the good news is there’s plenty of easy ways to help local populations, from ‘Hedgehog Highways’ and houses, to supplementary food and wildlife gardening. Find out more and become a ‘Hedgehog Champion’ at www.hedgehogstreet.org.
