Project Description
Conigre Mead Volunteers are group of about 12 people but not all come every time. We are varying ages: People of retirement age, students (18 years or older) and adults who have full time jobs during the week.
The work on the day is organised by a Task Leader who is a volunteer but under guidance of WWT.
Conigre Mead Nature Reserve is a small (3 acres) reserve on the south east bank of the River Avon. It is an urban reserve used regularly by dog walkers. The reserve used to be a field but was bought by WWT about in 1988. A lot of trees were planted so the reserve is mostly woodland with a few open spaces. There are three ponds in the reserve of varying sizes. Only one pond has water in all year round. There are reeds along the river bank which are good habitat for dragonflies. Part of the reserve regularly floods in winter months. This means that some areas get covered with silt which is too nutrient rich for wild flowers to grow. The reserve has some common wild flowers but is not a wildflower meadow! There are several benches and a seat for people to sit and relax.
