Project Summary

We are looking for volunteers to help with undertaking a Dormouse Footprint Tunnel Survey across some of our reserves. As you cannot disturb a dormouse without a licence, we intend to use non-invasive footprint tunnels to access for their presence.

Project Description

Prior experience in dormice/small mammals/ footprints is helpful but not required – training in how to undertake the survey and footprint identification will be provided. All you need is the enthusiasm to go out regularly – and the drive to learn more about our wonderful local wildlife.

What you will be doing

  • Walking a transect and locating footprint tunnels, applying fresh ink and replacing cards
  • Identifying small mammal footprints
  • Liaison with volunteers and staff
  • Passing on survey results to Avon Wildlife Trust staff

The skills you need

  • Basic small mammal footprint identification is a plus but not required
  • Willingness to learn
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain
